The World Health Organization defines Mental Health as “A state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to their community.

Therefore, mental health is not the same as a diagnosable mental illness. According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, “a mental illness refers to a variety of mental disorders that can be diagnosed. Mental disorders are health conditions that are characterized by alterations in thinking, mood, or behaviour associated with distress and/or impaired functioning.”

Therefore, if you are challenged with a substance Use Disorder or any other form of Addictive behavioural disorder, you would be considered to have a mental illness according to the DSM 5 and ICD 10, the industry-endorsed mental illnesses diagnostic manuals.

Addiction, Mental or Emotional distress always starts as a PROCESS

To lower the risk of relapsing during your treatment or soon into after-treatment recovery, you must identify and explore:-

  • Are you ready and motivated to change?
  • Where are you in the stages of the change cycle?
  • What are your triggers and distorted or irrational ways of thinking about those triggers?

  • What are your old behaviours (actions, reactions, and feelings or emotions) based on your distorted or irrational thinking?
  • What are your default defence mechanisms for coping with these triggers that cause your distorted or irrational thinking and related feeling or emotions?
